Kişisel kullanımlara örnek olarak; ısınma amaçlı elektrikli sobaları, set üstü ocakları ve infrared saunaları gösterebiliriz. Tıbbi kullanımlarda; küvezler, fizik tedavi uygulamaları ve diğer teknik uygulamaları gösterebiliriz. Endüstriyel uygulamalar ise çok yaygın olarak kullanılmaktadır. Tekstil, matbaa, gıda, plastik, cam, haberleşme ve birçok sanayi dalını sayabiliriz. Üretimin her aşamasında ısı vardır. Bu aşamalar pişirme, şoklama, yumuşatma, tavlama, eritme, yapıştırma ve kurutma olabilir. Isıyı iletmenin en etkin yolu da infrared olduğu için yoğun olarak endüstriyel üretim uygulamalarında kullanılmaktadır.
Dijital haberleşmede data iletiminde gene infrared kullanılmaktadır. Örnek olarak cep telefonu bilgisayar veri iletimini yada uzaktan kumandaları örnek gösterebiliriz.
Hareket algılama sensörleri ve ısı okuma sensörlerinde infrared kullanılmaktadır.
Infraredin bu kadar farklı alanda farklı amaçlarla kullanılması infraredin dalga boyunun (Lamda) değişmesi ile gerçekleşebilmektedir. Kısa dalga ve orta dalga yoğun olarak ısı uygulamalarında uzun dalga ise dijital veri iletimi ve sensör uygulamalarında kullanılmaktadır.
